We loved St. Croix! It's a great island - big enough to have a real town (Christiansted), rural areas with cows, a "moist" forest (not quite enough rain for an official rain forest), and charming people. They even have a university - University of the Virgin Islands! This was the one place of all the places we visited on our trip that we thought we could realistically live very happily.
Christiansted is a lovely town with much of its original Danish architecture preserved. it is also a bit of an artist's colony with many lovely galleries and working artists. They have a fun street party, called "Jump Up" a few times a year and we were lucky enough to make it to one. St. Croix is also home to the Cruzan Rum Distillery - one of our favorites!
For some reason I mostly took pictures of stupid animal tricks in St. Croix. We attended the hermit crab races, saw a beer-guzzling pig, and awoke one morning to see a horse and rider swimming through the anchorage. At Buck Island just off St. Croix we saw a pod of dolphins playing with a few cruising boats and also enjoyed some of the best snorkeling of the whole trip. Jackie was lucky enough to see a spotted eagle ray - beautiful!
Above: Beer-guzzling pig; Left: do you see a brown head in front of
the red sailboat? That's a horse with a rider swimming through the
anchorage - I swear, it was early morning and I had NOT had any rum yet!!
