We really wanted to see this amazing place and after we
checked in we took a taxi tour with Mr. Wayne Peterson, an eight generation
native of Saba. He showed us many amazing things.
For example, Saba boasts the world's shortest runway. The Dutch experts who were originally consulted claimed that there was not enough flat space anywhere on the island to accommodate an airport. But a dedicated Saban took a correspondence course from the University of Chicago, and flights go in and out of Saba daily.
Similarly, Sabans built, by hand, a road that connected their two main villages, Windwardside and The Bottom. This is "the road that couldn't be built".
The architecture
The architecture of all the homes is similar, painted white
with green shutters and red roofs (bananas optional)
We visited a beautiful church with very interesting murals at the altar.
You can climb up to the top of the highest peak, Mt. Scenery, somewhere around 3000 ft (or more) high. But we didn't. Next time!
