Go Back to Ellipsis' Photo Gallery

Bahamian Independence Day is July 10, and although we were in Nassau later in July, some of the government buildings were still decked out in the turquoise, yellow and black bunting of the Bahamian flag.  It looks gorgeous on the pastel-coloured buildings.

Even Ellipsis was decked out to help the Bahamians celebrate the 33rd year of their independence (below).

We walked all over town and also used the jitneys (public buses).  We walked up to Fort Fincastle, one of three forts remaining from the 18th century.  Fort Fincastle is on top of a hill in Nassau proper, and is interesting because it is shaped like the bow of a ship!  Below is a picture of the "bow" and in front of the "bow" of the fort is a landmark water tower.

We couldn't climb the water tower because it was under renovations, but there was a great view of Nassau Harbour from the Fort (below).

We also really enjoyed our visit to the National Gallery of Art.  It is only two years old and already has a beautiful and well-displayed collection of Bahamian art and tells the story of its evolution.  But, guess what, you're not allowed to take pictures there!
