The national emblem of the Turks & Caicos is distinguishable
by the coat of arms being flanked by two pink flamingos. Flamingos live
naturally in various areas of the Turks & Caicos (and also some islands in the
southeastern Bahamas). In Cockburn Harbour, we went out to the salt ponds
to see the flamingos who live there. The salt ponds are a saltwater marsh
or flats created by a "hole" in the island. Seawater comes through to this
inland location and makes the salt ponds. The salt ponds were constructed
to harvest sea salt - seawater is allowed to flow in to the shallow ponds, and
when they dry up, you have sea salt. Lots of gorgeous birds including
flamingos like to live in such a place, eating shrimp.
Flamingos flying - see their black tipped wings?
